Best Time to Experience the 11 Days Honeymoon Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Bliss
The best time to experience a safari like the one described, which includes the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and Zanzibar, generally falls within the dry seasons. Here’s a breakdown:
Monthly Breakdown:
Long Dry Season (June to October): This is often considered the absolute best time for general wildlife viewing across most of Tanzania, including the Serengeti and Tarangire. The weather is cooler and drier, making animals congregate around water sources, thus easier to spot. The vegetation is also less dense. This period also coincides with the dramatic wildebeest river crossings in the northern Serengeti (though your itinerary focuses on the central and southern parts). The Ngorongoro Crater is excellent for game viewing year-round, but the dry season offers more comfortable conditions. Zanzibar is also pleasant and dry during these months.
Short Dry Season (January to February): This is another very good time for a safari, and it aligns with the dates you were initially given. The weather is generally warm and dry, though there’s a chance of short rains (typically at night). This period is particularly significant in the southern Serengeti for the wildebeest calving season. Witnessing thousands of newborns and the predator activity it attracts is a unique spectacle. Tarangire also offers excellent game viewing during this time. Zanzibar is hot and sunny, ideal for a beach holiday after the safari.
While the long rains (March to May) and short rains (November to mid-December) can still offer good wildlife viewing in some areas, the heavy rainfall can make some roads impassable, and the dense vegetation can make animal spotting more challenging. Zanzibar also experiences more rain and humidity during these periods.
In summary, while June to October is often touted as the prime safari season, January and February offer a fantastic experience, especially for witnessing the wildebeest calving in the Serengeti and enjoying warm, sunny weather throughout, including Zanzibar.
